| A
large Courier service recently contacted me and asked, "Would you
be interested in selling your business?"
I have two standard answers for this question depending on the kind of
day I’m having.
If it’s a good day; I say, "Sure, I’d sell if the deal is fair!"
The thing about fairness is that it should be that, for both sides, and
in this case it wasn’t. Fortunately, I have experience in evaluating the
value of businesses and in buying and selling them. So I didn’t go for
their cleverly presented plan, though I could certainly see how one might
fall victim, and get robbed. If you get to a point whereby you’re
considering the sale of your business, I highly recommend that you retain
someone who has experience in these types of transactions.
Today, in most industries, consolidation is vastly taking place. The
big companies are getting bigger and the smaller ones are getting squeezed
out. Obtaining some of a larger competitors’ clients as well as being a
successful company increases the chances of being sought-out for
acquisition, so it was certainly nice for us to be noticed.
In case you were wondering. If I’m not having such a good day,
my response to the above question is; "How much am I going to have
to pay you to take it?" |

The Business "Concierge"!
So you need someone to do something for you, whether it’s someone to
provide a service; to help with taxes or banking, sell your home or
business, help you after you’ve been hurt or wronged, or to help with
medical or insurance matters. Perhaps it’s someone to do repair work, to
do some drawing or construction, or to help find something, or to answer a
question, or…(I could go on and on.).
Even though it may not be the business I’m in, I’m often asked,
"Do you know someone who can…(any of the above)?"
Most of the time I do have someone to refer, and it seems that they get
taken better care of, just because they were referred.
There’s a real nice feeling obtained when putting people together to
do business. I enjoy being thought of and looked at as a resource and as
an asset. It helps me too to be more networked. It’s especially nice to
have helped and be appreciated by both of the people that were introduced.
We commonly refer people to restaurants or to see a particular movie.
Why? Because we want them to share in the enjoyment that we had had. This
is a genuinely selfless act that gives little or no gratification. The
face-less proprietor of the eating establishment and Movie Theater (as
well as the producers, et al) shall gain, financially. So why is it so
much easier to give the restaurant and movie referral, as opposed to that
of other businesses that will appreciate it? Maybe it’s just different;
nevertheless, for me, there’s certainly more to gain all around from the
later. |

You Must Be Joking!
This is a true story that recently happened to us!
A young man walks into our shop, inquiring about a job. He is given an
application at a time when we were all busy. He completes the
application and presumably leaves it on the counter.
After a short while we realize that he had left. Also, that we were
missing our base radio/phone, our main source of communication with our
drivers.
The job application had his name, address, phone and social security
numbers, etc. When the police arrived, it was revealed that this was a
violation of his parole. Needless to say his embarrassed Mother returned
the unit.
No, we didn’t hire him, but we think he’s now working for one of our
competitors.
